His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye, on the occasion of Türkiye’s Republic Day.

In his message, President Dr Muizzu conveyed the felicitations and best wishes of the Government and the people of the Maldives to President Erdoğan, the government and the brotherly people of Türkiye.

The President stated that the Maldives joins Türkiye in celebrating the nation's progress and achievements over the decades, reaffirming the Maldives’ deep appreciation for the close and friendly relations between the two countries, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared values.

The President also extended his personal best wishes for President Erdoğan’s continued good health and wellbeing, and for the lasting peace and prosperity of the people of Türkiye.

In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu expressed his wishes for the continued progress of the people of Türkiye and expressed confidence in Türkiye’s global partnerships for peace and prosperity, including with the Maldives, noting that they will continue to bring shared benefits.

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and His Excellency Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), took part in an exhibition football match held as part of the Kids’ Football Festival organised by the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). The event took place today at the National Stadium and was organised in conjunction with Infantino’s visit to the Maldives.

President Dr Muizzu’s team included Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Cabinet Ministers, and senior Government officials. FIFA President Infantino’s team featured former Italian footballer Marco Materazzi and several renowned legends of Maldivian football. Infantino’s team claimed a 6-4 victory in the match.

During the event, President Dr Muizzu and FIFA President Infantino jointly unveiled the Diamond Jubilee logo commemorating 75 years of Maldivian football. Both leaders, along with the participating players, also interacted with children from the festival teams and signed autographs.

Official football tournaments in the Maldives began with the formation of "Kulhivaru Muntazim" as a sports regulation body in 1950. The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) was founded in 1982 and became a member of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in 1986.

Strengthening sports infrastructure, creating opportunities for athletes, and fostering a healthy and active society remain key priorities of President Dr Muizzu’s Administration.

His Excellency Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Friday evening at the President’s Office.

President Dr Muizzu warmly welcomed Infantino to the Maldives and expressed his sincere appreciation for taking the time to visit the country.

During the call, the President reaffirmed his Administration’s strong commitment to the development of football in the Maldives, noting that it is the nation’s most popular sport and a unifying force among its people. He outlined the ongoing infrastructure initiatives aimed at developing sporting facilities across the islands this year and next. The President also reiterated his full support for the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) and its leadership in advancing the sport nationwide.

Infantino acknowledged the challenges football in the Maldives has faced in recent years but expressed his satisfaction with the progress being made. He commended the efforts of the new FAM leadership and pledged FIFA’s continued support. He also emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent, stating that such efforts would enable the Maldives to shine globally – not only for its natural beauty but also through its achievements in football.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening football in the Maldives, supporting the growth of the FAM, and exploring future avenues for collaboration.

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended warm congratulations to His Excellency Dr Patrick Herminie on his election as President of the Republic of Seychelles.

In his message, President Dr Muizzu wished President-elect Dr Herminie every success in office and expressed confidence that Seychelles would continue to flourish and achieve significant development under his leadership.

Reaffirming the close and friendly relations between the Maldives and Seychelles, the President said he looks forward to working with President-elect Dr Herminie to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in addressing challenges shared by both island nations.

President Dr Muizzu concluded his message by extending best wishes for the health of President-elect Dr Herminie and for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Seychelles.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Felix Neumann, officially presented his Letter of Credence to His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office.

Dr. Neumann was escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional Haiykolhu cultural procession, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force Drum and Trumpet Band.

President Dr. Muizzu received the Letter of Credence and extended a warm welcome to Dr. Neumann, formally recognizing him as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Maldives.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany were first established on 5 July 1966.

The new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, His Excellency Dr MD Nazmul Islam, presented his Letter of Credence to the President, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, at a ceremony held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

The High Commissioner was escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional cultural procession, Haiykolhu, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.

Following the presentation of credentials, the President and the High Commissioner reflected on the longstanding bonds of friendship between the Maldives and Bangladesh. They emphasised the deep-rooted people-to-people connections and the history of mutual support and cooperation shared by the two nations.

Discussions also centred on enhancing collaboration in key areas such as agriculture, economic development, higher education, and trade and investment. Both parties affirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations for mutual benefit.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were established on 22 September 1978.

The new High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, His Excellency Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, presented his Letters of Credence to the President, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.

The President accepted the Letters of Credence and formally welcomed His Excellency Mohamed Rizvi Hassen as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives.

Following the ceremony, the President and the High Commissioner discussed areas of mutual interest, including trade, the economy, and climate change. They underlined the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections and discussed ways to broaden cooperation, with the aim of further enhancing the close bilateral relations between the two nations.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on 26 July 1965.

In his letters, President Dr Muizzu conveyed sincere felicitations to The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and to His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He expressed the Maldives' deep appreciation for the close and historic ties between the two nations, founded on shared Islamic values, mutual respect, and enduring solidarity.

The President reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to strengthening its brotherly partnership with Saudi Arabia, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration for the benefit of both nations and the wider Islamic Ummah. He also acknowledged the Kingdom's generous support over the years, including its contribution to the development of Velana International Airport, a milestone in bilateral cooperation.

President Dr Muizzu also posted on his official X account, highlighting Saudi Arabia's unwavering friendship and development assistance to the Maldives, expressing confidence in further strengthening ties in the years ahead.

President extends National Day greetings to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Digital Transformation Council.

The Council, established on the advice of the Cabinet, has been mandated to facilitate, guide, and oversee the implementation of the roadmap formulated to realise the “Maldives 2.0 – Digital-First Nation” vision. The Council will be chaired by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

An initiative by the President, Maldives 2.0 charts a reformative digital transformation whereby all State institutions work in tandem towards providing prompt, safe, and transparent services to the public. The programme would see revolutionary changes, placing digital transformation at the core of governance and service delivery.

President establishes Digital Transformation Council

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today ratified the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill (Act No. 16/2025), bringing the legislation into effect. The bill was passed by the People’s Majlis at its Sixth Special Session, convened on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, outside the ordinary sitting.

The primary objective of the Act is to foster the growth of a free and independent media landscape in the Maldives while safeguarding the continued exercise of press freedom. It further seeks to prevent the spread of false information, ensure the effective realisation of constitutional guarantees through fair and transparent mechanisms, and establish a framework that upholds both the rights and responsibilities of journalists and media professionals.

In addition, the Act introduces streamlined procedures for the registration of media outlets, thereby facilitating implementation and advancing press freedom in line with contemporary global standards. A dedicated regulatory authority will also be established under the Act to oversee both print and broadcast media.

With its enactment, the Maldives Media Council, previously constituted under the Newspapers and Magazines Act (Act No. 47/78) and the Maldives Media Council Act (Act No. 15/2008), shall be dissolved. Similarly, the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, created under the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 16/2010), will be reconstituted as the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission.

Until the new Commission is formally established under the provisions of this Act, its powers and functions will be exercised by an interim committee of five members appointed by the Civil Service Commission.

President ratifies Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Public Referendum Bill (Law No. 15/2025) today. The bill was passed during the 5th Special Session of the People’s Majlis, held on Monday, 15 September 2025, outside the regular sitting.

The bill establishes the principles and procedures for conducting a public referendum to ascertain public opinion on matters of national significance. It stipulates that the People’s Majlis may resolve to hold a referendum on issues affecting the people, while the President may also call one to determine public sentiment on questions of national importance.

The bill further stipulates that when Parliament passes an amendment to specific Articles of the Constitution, the President must call a referendum before it may be incorporated into the Constitution.

The bill also sets out the responsibilities of those proposing a referendum, the procedures to be followed by the Elections Commission in administering it, and other related provisions.

Following ratification, the Public Referendum Bill has been published in the Government Gazette and has now come into force.
